Keep Austin Weird. With a slogan like that, I knew that I wanted to visit Austin on my honeymoon road trip. Toby and I don’t exactly live a conventional life and I have always been attracted to the weird and wonderful so Austin was a perfect fit for us.

Along with its quirky reputation, there are a number of things that make Austin such a desirable place to visit. It is a very green city with abundant nature right in the city, there is an incredible food scene – especially when it comes to Mexican food and Texas barbecue, and the city is a hub for art and music.

It’s a fun city to experience no matter what you are into, but I enjoyed focusing on the more unique things to do around the city when we visited. I loved my short but sweet time there and was nearly ready to call the movers and just live there. Austin will do that to you.

Here are the most fun things to do in Austin for couples.

1) See the Famous Austin Bats

If you are visiting Austin between spring and early fall, don’t miss seeing the largest population of urban bats in North America. Hundreds of Mexican free-tailed bats live under the Congress Avenue Bridge and from around sunset you will start seeing the mass exodus of the bats as they go out to feed (don’t worry, just on bugs – not human blood).

Bring a blanket and grab a spot with your loved one just east of the bridge where you have a clear view of the bridge and the sky. Arrive early to grab a good spot.

2) Go For a Long Walk in Nature

Austin may not have any beaches, obviously the perfect place for a long walk if you are with your significant other, but there are so many excellent parks and green spaces right in the city that are perfect for a romantic walk.

Hiking to the viewpoint on Mount Bonnell is a popular walk for couples, and I recommend packing a picnic to enjoy at the top. We also enjoyed walking the pleasant Barton Creek Greenbelt, a green escape starting right in the city.

3) See Live Music

Austin is known as the “Live Music Capital of the World” so you should definitely try to experience some while you are in the city. There is a wide range of music to choose from whether you are into country, punk, rock, jazz, blues – Austin has got it all.

Don’t miss experiencing live jazz at Elephant Room, see a show at the Historic Scoot Inn – one of the oldest continuously running beer joints in Texas, or learn how to two-step with your darling at The Broken Spoke.

4) Eat Texas Barbecue

Maybe eating messy barbecue might not seem like the most fun thing to do with your beloved, but I beg to differ. If you eat barbecue with your partner, then you can order lots of different options and share. See – eating barbecue is a great couples activity.

The most iconic place to get Texas Barbecue is the James Beard awarded Franklin Barbecue which is famous for its perfect brisket, but be prepared to wait in a very long line for the honor. Other well-regarded options include KG BBQ which offers Egyptian-Texan fusion barbecue, and Distant Relatives which has Texas-style modern African American fare.

5) Swim at Barton Springs

Barton Springs in Zilker Park is a beautiful spring-fed pool surrounded by greenery. The pool is a massive three acres in size, and the temperature stays at a very comfortable 68-70 degrees year round – perfect for a swimming date at any time of year.

Take a picnic and spend the day there in the warmer months, it is a great way to escape the oppressive heat and humidity of a Texas summer.

6) Go on a Self-Guided Street Art Tour

If you are street art lovers, why not go on a self-guided street art tour with your sweetheart? Austin is one of the best street art cities in the U.S. and is home to so many incredible murals scattered throughout the city.

You can join a guided tour or take your own self-guided street art walk to see the best street art in Austin. Don’t miss the famous Greetings From Austin and Willie (Nelson) For President murals.

7) Bike Riding at Lady Bird Lake

Hiring a bike for a couple of hours and riding around lovely Lady Bird Lake is a fun day out for couples. It’s ten miles total around the lake on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, with very little elevation change.

Stop along the way to rest and enjoy the views out over the lake, and you can also combine this activity with a swim at nearby Barton Springs.

8) Eat the Best Donuts of Your LIFE

Just like with Texas Barbecue, I think eating delicious donuts with your significant other is one of the most fun things to do in Austin for couples because you can get two different donuts and share them. And when you are going to the best donut food truck in the world, that’s important. You’re going to want to try at least two.

Gourdough’s Donuts are incredible and they are seriously the best donuts I have ever had. I still dream about them. They are massive though, so skip a meal before you come here. I like the vibe at their original trailer, and we really enjoyed their strawberry and cream donut and the peach donut but everything looked good.
