My 3 Day Tour From Marrakech To Merzouga Desert

There are some trips that you end up taking, and then there are other trips that end up taking you. My 3-day tour from Marrakech to the Merzouga Desert was the latter, a journey that seeped into my heart, etched in golden dunes, ancient kasbahs, and the warmth of people I met along the way.

I found more than vast dunes; I discovered history, culture, and serenity that only the desert can offer.

In this post, I’ll give you the rundown on my 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech so that you can have an amazing time in the Moroccan Sahara Desert, just like I did.

Day 1: Red City of Marrakech – Aït Benhaddou – Dades Valley

After checking out of one of the beautiful riads in Marrakech, I loaded my suitcase with necessary and basic things and made my way to Aït Benhaddou. This place is a gem because of its stunning sights filled with fortified villages and ancient walls.

So, along the way, I passed through the Atlas Mountains and saw a mountain pass (Tizi n’Tichka), and the truth is, I couldn’t take my eyes off it because of the amazing landscapes.

A few minutes later, I came across a small Berber village, and I saw the people performing their daily tasks, such as farming, trading, and buying. 

After a while of driving, we came across my most anticipated attraction, the UNESCO Site of Aït Benhaddou. With only a small fee, I was able to visit this place, and I saw where my favorite series was shot – Game of Thrones. This location is packed with narrow alleys, uneven staircases, and centuries-old buildings and with the help of a guide, I learned about the history and culture of this beautiful place.

The next part of the tour was to the Dades Valley, where I had a nice Chickpeas with Spinach Soup for dinner. From there, I headed to the guesthouse to spend the night.

Day 2: Todra Gorges – Merzouga – Camel Ride into the Desert

I started early in the morning to witness the sunrise and the amazing view of the Dades Gorges. From there, I went for a small hike. Since this place is surrounded by natural beauty and rugged terrain, I captured some stunning images to remember the lovely surroundings.

Next, I traveled to the Merzouga desert. The view of the Erg Chebbi dunes caught my attention immediately as I arrived, and I embarked on some camel trekking. While I’m sure most of you have ridden horses before, my camel ride in Merzouga was an unforgettable experience that will stay with me forever. I got to peer over the dune tops and take in the breathtaking desert scenery.

After having one of the best adventures in a long while, I took the camel ride to the Sahara Desert camp, where I had another beautiful experience.

First we had a campfire dinner, followed by traditional music. The cherry on top was the stargazing; it was a magical experience and I hope to do it again someday.

Day 3: Merzouga – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

I wished I could add more days to my itinerary, but since my budget and plan were just for three days, well, I had to stick to it. Today was the final day, and I woke up to witness another sunrise on the top of the dunes.

After having my breakfast in the desert camp that included tea and coffee, olives, yogurt, fresh fruits, cheese & butter, boiled eggs, jam, honey, and amlou, msemen with Moroccan Bread (Khobz), I returned to Marrakech, stopping at Ouarzazate along the way.

This is popularly known as the “Gateway to the Sahara”, but I called it the “Gateway to my heart” because this little city added even more fun to my 3-day desert itinerary. I was contemplating whether or not I should visit the famous Atlas Studios because I was so tired, but I later did, and it was worth it. I saw a massive film set in this studio and learnt how many movies have been produced here.

As I mentioned earlier, I never wanted this tour to end, but we all know that all stories come with an ending. Still, this 3-day tour was actually enough for me to explore all the places I desired in this itinerary
